STEP 20 - TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT

broken image

The TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT, or TMJ, is a joint that connects the lower jaw, called the mandible, to the skull in the front of the ear, called the temporal bone. Problems with this joint can cause head tension.

Teeth grinding and clenching, known as Bruxism, can cause tension in the jaw that can travel up to the head. Other dental problems may also be involved.

Millions of people may be clenching or grinding their teeth every night but may not be aware of it until dental changes occur, or they begin to notice a constant aching or head tension.

A variety of helps are available for TMJ problems, such as jaw exercises, splints, mouth guards, and avoiding very hard foods, heat, and cold. There are also Essential Oils that can help with TMJ head tension, including:

  • Marjoram

  • Peppermint

  • Eucalyptus
